Last Seen Online FAQ

Quick answers about game length, platforms, mobile support, horror content, replaying, endings and where to get help.

This is the page for general questions about Last Seen Online: what it costs, how long it takes, where it runs and how frightening it is. If you are stuck on a puzzle, the puzzle guides are the place to go — this page deliberately never states an answer, a password or a sequence.

Before you play

What it costs, how long it takes and where the official versions live.

Is Last Seen Online free?No spoilersOfficial

Yes. The game is free to play on Steam, and the official itch.io version can also be played in the browser. There is no paid tier, no paid DLC and no in-game purchase — there is nothing to buy once you start.

How long is Last Seen Online? No spoilersThis guide

Expect roughly 30–60 minutes. A direct, guide-assisted run can be over in around 30 minutes; the official itch.io listing describes the average session as about an hour, which better matches exploring the chats, notes and optional content. Reading everything on Liz’s computer is what pushes a playthrough toward the longer end.

Can I play it in a browser? No spoilersOfficial

Yes. The original official release is HTML5 and runs directly in a browser with no account and nothing to install. It is the same game as the Steam release rather than a cut-down version.

Play in browser →
Is Last Seen Online on Steam? No spoilersOfficial

Yes. There is an official Steam release alongside the itch.io build, with Windows and macOS versions. The browser build is the original free release; Steam is the way to keep a local copy.

Platforms & languages

Where the game runs, what it is controlled with, and which languages it ships.

Can I play Last Seen Online on mobile? No spoilersOfficial

Yes. The official browser version lists smartphone and touchscreen input support, so it runs on phones and tablets without an app — and the developer has specifically patched mobile audio in the past. Be aware that the puzzle interaction and the old-computer interface were designed for a larger screen, so tapping through the desktop can feel fiddly on a phone.

Play on your phone →
Does Last Seen Online work on Mac?No spoilersOfficial

Yes. The Steam release supports macOS as well as Windows; macOS 10.15 or later is the listed minimum. The browser version runs on a Mac too, so you do not need the Steam build to play.

Play the official game →
What controls does it use?No spoilersOfficial

Keyboard, mouse and touchscreen. The game is almost entirely pointing and clicking — the keyboard is only really used for typing passwords and codes. There are no gamepad controls and nothing depends on timing or reflexes.

Do I need to download it?No spoilersOfficial

No. The browser version plays immediately on the itch.io page with nothing to install. The Steam release is the downloadable option if you would rather have a local copy.

What languages does Last Seen Online support? No spoilersGame files

The game ships 17 locales: English, Czech, Esperanto, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Simplified Chinese. The official itch.io listing currently displays 16 of them — Korean is present in the game files but not shown on that list, so a language count of 16 is not wrong, just older. The in-game language is changed in the settings menu.

Horror & content

What kind of horror this is, and what the developer warns about.

Does Last Seen Online have jumpscares? No spoilersOfficial

Yes, but they are relatively restrained. The developer describes the horror as more of a slow creep than a traditional jump scare, so expect a handful of sudden moments rather than a game built around them.

How scary is Last Seen Online?Light spoilerOfficial

It leans toward psychological unease, unsettling discovery and atmosphere rather than constant action horror. Most of the dread comes from what you read on Liz’s computer and what you slowly work out it implies. There is no combat, and nothing is shown in explicit detail.

Is it suitable for children? No spoilersOfficial

The developer explicitly says no. The official listing describes the game as not suitable for children or for those who are easily disturbed — so this is the developer’s own guidance rather than an age rating this site has invented.

What content warnings does it have?Light spoilerOfficial

The game deals with depression, childhood trauma and accidental deaths, and its horror is psychological rather than action-driven — the Steam mature-content notice explicitly flags those themes as textual depictions. If any of that is difficult for you, treat this as a real warning rather than a formality.

Game structure

How the game is put together, and what happens after the ending.

How many puzzles are there? No spoilersGame files

There are nine major required puzzle/progression gates between the login screen and the ending. Each one has its own guide that starts with a hint and keeps the answer folded, so you can check how many you have left without seeing a solution.

Does Last Seen Online have multiple endings?Story spoilerGame files

No. The current game has one canonical ending. What the game leaves open is interpretation rather than branching — no route or choice swaps it for a different one.

Ending explained →
Can I replay the game?No spoilersOfficial

Yes. Scroll to the bottom of the credits and use the replay option — it was added after players asked for a way to start over. Note that “progress” means three different things here: the game’s own save file, the walkthrough progress this site stores on your device, and Steam achievements. Replaying affects the game, not the progress tracker on this guide.

Is there optional content?Light spoilerGame files

Yes. The nine gates are the required path, but a lot of material sits beside it: conversations on the Buddy List, diary notes, extra photos and eleven achievements. None of it is needed to reach the ending, and some of it is easy to walk straight past.

Track the optional unlocks →
How many achievements are there? No spoilersOfficial

Eleven Steam achievements. None of them need a second playthrough, but three come from optional actions rather than the required path — the joke password, reading the notes to the bottom and the credits scroll — so plenty of players finish the story at 8/11 or 9/11.

Help & next steps

Where to go when you are stuck, and what is coming next.

Where should I go if I’m stuck? No spoilersThis guide

Start on the puzzle hub. It lets you pick the gate you are looking at instead of guessing its name, and every entry leads to a guide with hints before answers. The walkthrough is the other direction — use it when you know where you are and want to know what comes next.

Where can I find spoiler-free hints? No spoilersThis guide

Every puzzle guide opens with a light hint and keeps the answer folded until you ask for it, and hints mode collects those first tiers in one place so you can read around a puzzle without meeting the solution. Nothing on this FAQ page resolves a puzzle either.

Is Last Seen Online 2 being made?No spoilersOfficial

Yes. A sequel/remake has been announced and is in development, but no release date has been confirmed — and the current name is not final. The sequel page tracks what is confirmed, what is only a developer hint, and what is still unknown, and it is updated as official statements appear.

Where the rest of the guide goes

This page handles general questions. The answers that decide whether you can finish the game live elsewhere, and they are all one click away.

A quick way to tell them apart: this FAQ tells you about the game, the pages below tell you what to do inside it.

What this page will not answer

This is a deliberate restriction, not an oversight. Puzzle solutions belong to the pages that can walk you through them step by step, and duplicating them here would spoil the game from the wrong place.

  • Passwords and codes — the computer login, the photos4em.zip code and the Other World invite code all have their own guides.
  • Puzzle answers — the door sequence, statue order, fountain word and tribute choice are never stated on this page.
  • Story and ending meaning — what happens and what the ending means are explained on the story and ending pages, with a warning before they spoil anything.
